Special Considerations with Regard to Boat Painting
When painting your wooden boat there are a few things you will need do to prepare it first and also to take into account when choosing which paint to use. In many cases, it could be as simple as sanding the surface down to a smooth finish, cleaning off any dust or loose material, applying a primer and then painting your top coat.
However, this article will look into some of the other considerations you may not have thought about and could just help save you from making a mistake with your boat painting, costing you both time and effort in the future.
When deciding on which paint is right for your job, there are a number of things you will need to think about. Factors include the intended use of the boat, what water it will be used in and so it goes on. There is a great selection of different paints available on the market, so choose on that suits your purpose the best.
If you have built a speed boat, I bet you haven’t thought about the fact that the paint you use can effect the speed your boat travels in the water. A smoother finish will mean less friction between your boats surface and the water, and therefore mean that it moves more efficiently through it.
Another thought is that you may also want to think about adding an anti-fouling layer to your boat painting program, in order to protect it from problems such as water based growths, like barnacles or algae if you are using your boat in areas where these things are a particular problem.
Now for my next point, you may not think that higher cost boat paint can really be that much different to warrant the extra cost. However, having had some experience, I can say that it really comes down to how regularly you want to have to repaint your boat. Cheap paint will need to be reapplied far more often than the higher quality ones, which will stand up to the test of time much better, fading slower, blistering less and being easier to clean.
On a final note with regard to boat painting, I just wanted to mention a few safety considerations. Always make sure that you wear the appropriate protective equipment. Always read the warnings on any paints you are using, as many will contain poisons or substances that are harmful if inhaled or come into contact with the skin. Also make sure that you follow any instructions and directions for use as these will have been written with safe use in mind.
On a final, final note, remember, doing a good job on your boat painting in the first place will help to protect your boat for longer and keep it looking great too, so take the time and effort to get it right first time round!
