Please help me understand this simple distance speed, and math word problem of time?
A theater boat traveled down the Mississippi River and back to their base in 25h. Traveling upstream, the boat can only handle a speed of 20km / h, but won 10 kmh downstream. How far upstream made the trip by boat? I realized the answer to this question using the following formula: X/20 + X/30 = 25 Can anyone help me understand why this works forumla and if you need to add another variable to find out how far they traveled upstream and downtream?
D = T RT = D / R since you have chosen distance x. .. then … = X/20 X/30 upstream time = time of time of up + down idle time = 25 so … X/20 + X/30 = 25 where x is the distance upstream flow or down … solving for x. .. we .. 50x = 15 000 x = 300 km and 300 km to flow downstream … the time taken upstream was … 300/30 = 10 hours, the time intermediate … 300/20 = time of 15 hours in total was 25 hours.
