Sea Kayaking Orcas

Killer whales / orcas! Where do I have the best chance of seeing them in British Columbia?
From Victoria, Vancouver or Tofino!! It’s been my dream to see killer whales in the wild since I can remember. I know its early in the year to see them in this area, but I know there are some residents.. what whale watching/sea kayaking company can I use that I will have a fair chance in spotting them on.
Dates:
I will be around
victoria&vancouver around 25th-29th may
Tofino 30th-4th may
Your best chance to see them kayaking in Johnstone Strait off of Vancouver Island: http://www.seakayaking.com/orca-killer-whale-kayak.htm. Although it is fantastic if you can see them from a kayak, if you can’t get to Johnstone Strait your chances of seeing them are better if you go on a motorized whale watching boat. They have spotters from the air so if they are in the area with the motor they can travel fast enough to get to the area where they are located on any given day. With a kayak if they aren’t in your immediate vicinity you can’t paddle far enough in a day to see them. When kayaking there is a lot of luck involved as to whether or not they are in the area you are kayaking in. The San Juan Islands across the US/Canadian border is another great place to see them: http://www.squidoo.com/San_Juan_Island
Four Great Reasons to Visit Alaska
When you think of traveling to Alaska, you may think only of cruise lines, salmon spawning, and whale watching, but Alaska is an awesome place to visit whether you arrive via cruise ship, private car, or plane. Activities for visitors are many, and their variety may surprise you.
Obviously one great reason to visit Alaska is to watch the wildlife. Beyond the well known whales, salmon, and bears, there are many opportunities to see moose, lynx, wolves, dall sheep, caribou, fox, coyotes, and more on land. You may take a guided tour or head to a wildlife refuge to see these animals, or you might just come across them in the course of your planned activities. Sea life is also abundant around the coasts, especially in the many fjords around the Kenai Peninsula. These under-water valleys, carved by glaciers that are still “calving” are home to many species including sea otters, puffins, sea lions, kittiwakes, humpback and orca whales, harbor seals, oyster catchers and more. Bird watchers will find many beautiful species spend time in Alaska, but may be particularly interested in the migrating shore birds in Homer or the snow geese in the Kenai River Flats.
To get closer to the wildlife, you may want to test your hand at Alaska’s fabled fishing. Charter boats, fish camps, guided float trips, and wilderness lodges specializing in fishing opportunities abound and offer year round fishing for Halibut, Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, and 5 Salmon species, and those are just in the waters around Kodiak! You won’t have any trouble finding some of the best fishing you’ve ever tried or someone willing to guide while you’re there.
Another great reason to visit Alaska is all of the outdoor activities readily available for all skill levels. You can hike the Harding Ice Field which is a glacier 1/2 a mile deep and bigger than Rhode Island, you can take a river float trip, white water raft, take sea kayaks out around Kodiak, hike, hunt, ski, canoe, mountaineer, or even scuba dive.
If you prefer time learning about the unique historical and cultural aspects of Alaska, there are plenty of opportunities for such experiences. Many varied tours are offered around the state featuring native traditions and history such as totem poles, native handiwork and crafts, blanket toss, native dancing and music, and various festivals. There are museums and cultural centers throughout the area including those centered on Alaska’s WWII activity, archaeological discoveries, the Alaskan Pipeline, the arts, and Alaskan Aviation. Additionally, you can learn about and experience Alaska’s gold rush days at many camps and tours centered on the subject.
As you can see from the above 4 reasons, Alaska is a great destination for your next trip. Whether you cruise there or use some other form of transportation, you will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of activities and people you will find there. You’ll be amazed at the abundant wildlife and its accessibility. You won’t be able to believe you didn’t go sooner. So plan your adventure in Alaska, and have a great time!
