How do I conquer my fear of deep water?
I recently went to a few parties where I had to spend time in 11ft. deep water. I needed a life jacket in order to stay afloat. I can swim pretty decently but the reason I’m scared to death of deep water is because I can’t tread. I feel like if I was suddenly pushed into deep water, I would just drown because I don’t know how to stay afloat. The only way I would survive in deep water is if I swam nonstop. I also feel a little embarrassed talking about this because I’m in my late teens. please help? (Advice from good swimmers preferred!!)
First you need to overcome your fear of the deep water. Start by standing in shallow water and have something on the bottom which you need to pick up. Gradually move into deeper and deeper water, continuing to bend down to pick up whatever it is from the bottom. When you get to about waist depth, you will suddenly find that you have to swim down to pick up the object.
That will show that, in a relaxed position, you will always be close to the surface. Use breast stroke kick to keep afloat. You should be able to keep that up for quite a while.
