Perhaps to their detriment, the island of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand has become infamous for the Full Moon parties that rage through the monthly City Haadrin. Coverage of international media and even the local perception in neighboring provinces often unfavorable. I often find that when Koh Phangan arises in conversation, Thais and tourists to raise the eyebrows a little, give a knowing smile, and make a derogatory comment about the island as if the party were all crazy Koh Phangan had to offer.
The reality could not be further from the truth. While the entire island is the influx of tourists during the full moon, only the strip between the Haadrin Thongsala and truth comes to the high reputation of the parts of the island. And that only happens for a few days either side of the Full Moon Party.
If they really be intimidated by the idea of the Full Moon Party, however, is an excellent alternative. Located on the north side of Koh Phangan, as far as you can get Haadrin road (or boat for that matter), is Chaloklum Fishing Village or Chaloklum Baan, as it is known locally. Haadrin Chaloklum and could not be more different although both occupy the same 168 km square slab of rock in the Gulf of Thailand. When invaded by Haadrin seems bathed in sunshine and alcohol-crazed-backpackers gap year on a tear, Chaloklum is a quiet fishing community that has preserved its Thai charm while providing a high level of services, activities and facilities for tourists, travelers and residents of long duration.
Chaloklum Village consists of a 1.5 kilometer stretch of low traditional houses Thailand shopping, small restaurants, bars, cafes and shops Chaloklum Bay. As the village has retained its traditional architecture, the traditional way of life followed in this fishing community assets. Squid boats port layers, the fish can be found sun drying on racks along the beach, children attend local school and the temple remains the center of village life.
It is a haven for family businesses and a sanctuary from the madness that seems to be weathering little little the rest of the island. Absent are the beer bars that line the road between Haadrin Thongsala and the South coast. In contrast, a business in one day host Chaloklum weekly jam session for children and music, providing arts and crafts and activities for visiting and local children, while adults listen to music spontaneously in vivo at night.
Ironically, Chaloklum is increasingly popular among people who helped make Haadrin what it is today. Travelers first full moon party in the last fifteen years Haadrin beach Koh Phangan again and again, just have different priorities, and, more often than children. Has Chaloklum evolved to meet the needs.
Many of these travelers returning have become permanent residents of Koh Phangan and settled in the growing number of private houses around Chaloklum. With the availability of broadband Internet and a growing infrastructure to improve communications, Chaloklum has become home of a growing community of writers, artists and others who work from home using the Internet to keep in touch.
The town also hosts a diving community growth. Due to its location on the north side of Koh Phangan, and big government dock, Chaloklum is the ideal starting point for diving trips to some of the best sites in the Gulf of Thailand. The abundance of decent housing prices, diving instruction of five stars and a number of excellent restaurants, pubs and services Chaloklum make an excellent place to complete an extensive scuba certification dive or simply enjoy fun in the warm waters of Thailand. If diving is not your thing, diving in Koh Ma is hard to beat.
For the sports junkie Chaloklum provides plenty of options. Depending on the season in both kite surfing and wakeboarding are available. The mountains surrounding the town also makes it an ideal place for mountain biking. For those who prefer to stand, a endless mountain trails and the forest that will satisfy even the most avid hiker or jogger adventure.
If relaxation is then swim, sunbathe or just relax in a beach bar with a smoothie or fruit beer in hand, Chaloklum is a stone's throw from some of the best beaches island. Haad Salad, Haad Mae Haad and Khom are all minutes away by car or motorbike taxi. Haad Yao and Haad Chao Prao are just a little further along the coast. For the ambitious explorer, ships long tail Chaloklum leave regularly from the bottle to otherwise inaccessible beach or even Thong Nai Pan
As a holiday destination Chaloklum is ideal for families, couples or unmarried. To be fair, however, whether or Chaloklum Haadrin or all points in between, all of Koh Phangan offers something for everyone, if you intend to stay for a week or a year. The island offers a variety of experiences for all ages and all budgets. Do not be fooled by what you might have heard. Come see for yourself same.
